A 1970s apartment in Barcelona transformed into a light-filled home that connects seamlessly with its private patio

Located in a quiet residential area of Barcelona, this 100 m² apartment had good bones but a fragmented layout. The kitchen was tucked at the front, the rooms were small and dark, and natural light barely reached the living spaces. We reworked the plan completely, moving the kitchen to the back, opening the patio, making larger bedrooms and creating a continuous flow between indoor and outdoor life. The result is a home that feels calm, bright, and better proportioned for modern living.

The guiding idea was to simplify: to give the apartment air and balance. Walls were removed to create visual continuity and natural light was prioritized in every decision. A neutral palette and tactile materials give warmth and quiet sophistication without overwhelming the space.

The new kitchen anchors the rear of the apartment, opening directly to the patio for an easy connection to outdoor dining and everyday life. The former kitchen space became a spacious bathroom, and circulation was streamlined to make every square meter count. Rooms were combined to make larger bedrooms and a new powder room was added to the back of the apartment.

In a second phase the small workshop at the back of the patio was renovated into a guest room.

In the third phase bespoke cabinetry was added to the long hallway to create a pantry extension for the kitchen and storage in the entryway.
